It’s the hard truth that selling supplements doesn’t make any sense on paper, but when you look at it from a horizon of 3 months, 6 months, 12 months, things start to make sense.

The mistake the usual business owner selling supplements on Amazon makes is calculating profit from day one. They forget that someone is ingesting their product and waiting to see if it makes sense for them, and it takes at least 30 days for supplements to work.

Supplements are not drugs. They are not medicine. They are just supplements and they take time to show impact.

On top of that, if you’re selling a supplement on Amazon, the usual CPC over there is around $3 to $4 to sell a product that has a selling price of $25.

To my estimate, if you’re not able to sell it within 10 clicks, then you are at a 0% loss on the selling price. But that’s also not 0% loss: that is negative by at least 20%-40%, because to produce a good supplement, it costs at least $6 to $7 bare minimum, and on top of that, the Amazon costs are going to be $13 to $14.

The first nail in the coffin – Supplement Ingredients

Back in 2015, selling a single-ingredient supplement made sense because nobody was really selling that kind. People were looking for alternatives with the slightest difference: whether it was organic, a higher dosage, or better standardization, people would pick it up and try it.

Moving forward to 2026, there is so much research and information prevalent on the internet, through ChatGPT, LLMs, AI, and social media. People can learn about an ingredient from anywhere, and they are looking for that exact thing plus some edge to it.

What a novice supplement seller will do is start trying to sell a single-ingredient supplement, which is the first nail in the coffin for a supplement brand.

Rather than going that route, what I would do is pick a popular ingredient, like ashwagandha or NAD+, and pair it with something that makes it more potent:

  • For ashwagandha, it could be ginger or turmeric.
  • For NAD+, it could be resveratrol.

These ingredients complement each other, helping to boost the overall efficacy and efficiency of the remedy.

I have explained the role of ingredients and knowledge that I have gained in last 4 years here.

The math of cost of selling and why it is not making sense

When selling supplements, you need to look beyond just the upfront cost. You need to look at cost of acquisition. You should always calculate customer acquisition cost with a view of 3 months, 6 months, or 12 months, because supplements are a business of subscriptions and repeatable buys not one time.

If you are trying to keep it along the lines of single-order profitability, you are going to fail, because your competitors are not doing that. One of your competitors might be spending $40 to acquire a customer for a $25 product because they know the customer is going to stay with them over a longer period of time, and that’s how they will make money. That is the only way to make money selling supplements on Amazon.

The only thing that will make a customer come back to you is if your ingredients have enough potency, enough science, or enough proof that the combination of ingredients works for the specific issue or solution they are looking for. If not, they are going to turn to someone else and look for more options, which would be your loss.

First things first: please ensure that your supplements are potent and effective, not just run-of-the-mill supplements that has placebo effect. On the surface, those supplement might look good, but deep down they are just what everybody else is selling, lacking real potency.

To summarize: your product must have good potency in its ingredients. Ensure that these supplements truly work and actually move the needle, rather than just being supplements in name only.

Here is the math how it works

Supplement Selling price = $25
Amazon FBA & Fees = – $7.5
Cost Per Click = – $2 * 5 Clicks To Get a sale = $10
COGS = – $7
Maths = $25 – $24.5 = $0.5 in your pocket

After selling a product for $25 you are getting $0.5 in your pocket but if same customer buys every month he will be paying $10/month. Now at least customer consumes around 3 bottles your profit is $22.5 per customer.
